Chapter 4: The Insatiable Planet

“A mystery? I like mysteries. I used to love ghost stories, but I’m guessing this isn’t one, right?”

“No,” the Archon agreed without showing a hint of humor. “This does not concern ghosts, but it could be interpreted as a matter of spirit. Something about this world is not right. But we do not know what it is.”

Keri and the other concubines were, for the first time, on the bridge of the starship. It was remarkably small, with just half a dozen Thrax sitting at various control panels. It seemed trivial compared to mission control rooms back home. But then, as Pereldi had explained, starships were massively automated. Officers spent most of their time making sure machines were doing their jobs properly.

Up on a large holovid screen was the image of a world. It was purplish red with alien plant life, a world of vast oceans and jungle-covered continents. It was not radiating any signs of advanced technology, and yet, its inhabitants were believed to be sentient. The problem was that there seemed to be too many intelligent species for one planet. And contacting any of them had proved problematic.

“It is a mysterious world,” the Archon said. “Some other powers have landed expeditions there. A few simply vanished; others returned with confusing tales of monsters, mirages, delusions. Technology does not function well due to some kind of interference, possibly natural, so recorded data is corrupted.”

Glund, the female warrior, spoke up. “Why not land a force of infantry and set up a defensive perimeter?”

The Archon grunted doubtfully. “Others have adopted the military approach. They did not fare well. Neither did purely scientific expeditions. They all became confused, even insane, and had to flee. This world, nameless and seemingly uncivilized, has resisted all attempts to dominate it. So, perhaps seduction might prove more effective.”

Enlightenment started to dawn on Keri. “You want us to go down there and shag everything in sight? See if this wins the elusive natives over?”

The Archon shrugged. “It is the last option we have. This system is a good one, in terms of resources, but if that world harbors sentience, we cannot touch anything. Prove that there is nothing down there but dumb animals. Or prove that there is some kind of mind and negotiate with it. Sexual contact may be the key. Some earlier expeditions seem to have become exhausted by intense copulation before being forced to leave. It is up to you, ladies, to show you are made of stronger stuff.”

It was decided. The three women would land somewhere on the nameless planet and do a little light exploring. If the natives showed up and were keen to fuck, so be it. If not, then they would take off in their shuttle and try again.

After a few days’ preparation, their shuttle launched, and they spiraled down through the dense, humid atmosphere to land in a jungle clearing somewhere near the equator.

“Hot,” said Keri, stepping out of the shuttle. “And steamy.”

The purple-red foliage all around them consisted mostly of broad, fleshy leaves.
